Step back 1,300 years and into one of the Channel Islands’ most intriguing legends – the tale of the Archbishop of Coutances, a remarkable figure who could reportedly walk from Normandy to Jersey at low tide. Armed with a simple plank, he is said to have crossed a stream encountered mid-journey, bridging land and sea with faith, practicality, and perhaps a keen knowledge of the tides.
But how much truth might lie behind this story?
Learn about both the legend and the landscape, and how our Island was formed. Beginning with the story itself, Paul will delve into what modern science tells us about prehistoric sea-level change and shifting coastlines.
Could the Bishop’s journey reflect a time when land and sea looked dramatically different? And how do myths like this preserve echoes of environmental change?
This 30-40-minute talk is perfect for anyone interested in local history, legends, and the fascinating science behind our changing world. There will be a Q & A session at the end.
Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided. This talk is FREE of charge, but booking is essential.
